Word Counter

Count words, characters, sentences and paragraphs instantly, plus estimated reading and speaking time for essays, articles and scripts.

How it works

Words = whitespace-separated tokens. Reading time = words ÷ 225 min. Speaking time = words ÷ 150 min. Pages ≈ words ÷ 500 (single-spaced).

Worked example

A 1,500-word article contains roughly 8,600 characters, takes about 6.7 minutes to read silently and 10 minutes to read aloud — about three single-spaced pages.

Frequently asked questions

How many pages is 1,000 words?

About two pages single-spaced or four double-spaced in 12pt Times New Roman with one-inch margins — the standard academic setup.

What reading speed is realistic?

Adults average 200–250 words per minute on general prose, dropping to 100–150 for technical material. This tool uses 225 as the midpoint.

Does the count include spaces?

Characters are shown both with and without spaces, because platforms differ — Twitter/X counts spaces, while many academic limits do not.
